78% of participants gave higher ratings to AI-generated poems than to those written by renowned poets

A recent study revealed that people often prefer AI-generated poems over works by classic poets like Shakespeare and Byron. Key findings include:

  • Popularity of AI Poems: 78% of participants rated AI-generated poems higher in qualities like rhythm and beauty.

  • Influence of Awareness: When unaware of the poems’ origins, participants favored AI works. However, once informed, they rated AI poems lower.

  • Identification Challenges: Participants incorrectly identified AI poems as human-written 58.5% of the time and accurately recognized human-written poems only 51.7% of the time.

Dr. Brian Porter explained the preference for AI poems stems from their accessibility, as they are easier to understand in one reading. Despite this, he emphasized that people still value the human element of poetry as an attempt at personal communication.
