SAG-AFTRA Calls Strike Against Major Video Game Companies

SAG-AFTRA has called for a strike against major video game companies after nearly two years of contract negotiations. The strike will begin on July 26, 2024, and targets companies such as Activision, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts, and Epic Games, among others. This decision follows a strike authorization vote from ten months prior. The primary issue is the use of artificial intelligence, with SAG-AFTRA demanding fair compensation and consent for the AI use of members' likenesses. Union leaders argue that video game companies have not adequately addressed these concerns, despite significant progress in other areas. The previous SAG-AFTRA strike against the gaming industry lasted 183 days from 2016-2017.

It's going to be a rough battle here. I feel empathy for the actors, AI is extremely detrimental to making them useless if this isn't played right.

I am not convinced that an AI will be a better actor than an actual person, at least not anytime soon.

These people are fighting for quality as well. I hope they crush em.
