Nearly half of Medium is AI slop

Medium, a popular blogging platform, is experiencing a surge in AI-generated content, referred to as “AI slop.” Despite the concerns, Medium's CEO, Tony Stubblebine, claims the issue is not significant as long as such content remains unread. An analysis by Pangram Labs found that nearly 47% of recent posts were likely AI-generated, with high instances in topics like cryptocurrency and web3. Originality AI, another detection company, found similar rates of AI content. Although Stubblebine acknowledges the rise in AI-generated posts, he disputes the reliability of detection tools and claims Medium's human moderation effectively prevents these posts from gaining traction.

Medium has implemented policies to curb AI content, restricting its monetization and visibility. However, AI detection tools have limitations, and critics argue that AI-generated content still occasionally garners significant engagement. Some editors praise Medium’s human-centric curation, while others remain frustrated with persistent AI content. Stubblebine’s pragmatic stance emphasizes amplifying quality writing rather than completely eliminating AI content. This approach highlights broader challenges of moderating the internet as AI content proliferates, reflecting a potential future where AI-generated material overwhelms human-created work online.

Tony Stubblebines stance seems both pragmatic and a bit concerning. If you dont actively work to minimize AI slop, are we just normalizing lower content quality?
