Chappell Roan’s war on fandom

Chappell Roan, a rising pop star, is pushing back against the "creepy" culture of fandom, where fans feel a sense of ownership over artists due to social media. Like Charli XCX, Roan criticizes how artists become trapped by fan expectations and comments online. Roan openly challenges fan behavior, stating she has the right to refuse invasive requests, such as photos, calling such demands abnormal.

Roan’s performances are known for their organic, rock-like energy, with minimal choreography but a strong connection to the audience. Her all-female band and charismatic stage presence amplify her appeal, with fans deeply engaged in her music. Her songwriting, which often addresses relationships and heartbreak, draws comparisons to Alanis Morissette's raw emotional style. Fans embrace both her older hits and new material, reflecting the strong attachment they feel to her work, even as Roan seeks to disentangle herself from the more intrusive aspects of fan culture. This speaks to a larger trend of young audiences creating real-world connections in response to the pressures of the internet.

The parasocial dynamics between fans and artists have gotten super weird lately. Social media makes it so easy for fans to think they “know” these artists personally, and that’s where the sense of ownership comes from. I love that Roan is standing her ground and reminding people that shes a human being, not a vending machine for selfies and fan service
