Universal Music Group (UMG) plans to remove its catalog from TikTok due to failed licensing negotiations, potentially causing songs from major artists like Taylor Swift and Drake to disappear.
TikTok responded, accusing UMG of being greedy and deceptive, highlighting the platform's role as a promotional and discovery vehicle for artists.
The dispute involves disagreements over artist compensation, artificial intelligence protections, and platform safety, with UMG expressing concerns about TikTok's promotion of AI-generated music.
Many of my music industry friends had concerns this was going to happen. It makes sense, the app is good for discovery, but if you are a mainstream artist like Drake or tailor swift, you make more money elsewhere, and the terms for you are pretty bad. So you have no interest in having your music there.
