Runway, an AI startup, has trained its AI text-to-video generator using thousands of YouTube videos and pirated films, according to a report from 404 Media. The training dataset includes content from major entertainment companies like Netflix, Disney, and Nintendo, as well as creators such as Linus Tech Tips and news outlets like The Verge. A former Runway employee revealed that the videos were collected using proxies to avoid detection. Runway's latest tool, Gen-3 Alpha, launched in June 2024, and aims to create videos in any style. The company claims to use "curated, internal datasets," but it's unclear if all videos in the spreadsheet were used for training. This practice of using YouTube videos for AI training has also been linked to other companies like Anthropic, Apple, and Nvidia.

Until the law steps in, all creators and COMPANIES that got their work stolen should boycott the use of this company.
I hope they plan to share the money that the model makes with all of us. smh.
The fact that youtube content strikes people over the smallest things, yet allows a major 130M backed company to steal hundreds of thousands of videos is mind blowing.
