Amazon's Audible is introducing a program that invites select US-based audiobook narrators to train artificial intelligence on their voices. These AI-generated voice clones will be used to produce audiobook recordings, allowing Audible to increase its audiobook offerings more quickly and at a lower cost. This initiative expands on Amazon's previous efforts to use AI narration, where self-published authors on the Kindle Store could have their works narrated by a generic AI voice. As of May 2024, over 40,000 books on Audible had utilized this AI technology. This move is seen as a way to integrate professional narrators into the growing trend of audiobook automation, which has been met with some skepticism.

Im oldschool, and nothing beats the human aspect for me. AI voices can never capture the subtle emotions and nuances that a real narrator can. It feels kind of soulless to me
