Bytedance introduces Jimeng AI, its new AI-powered text-to-video generator in China

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has launched Jimeng AI, an AI-powered text-to-video generator in China, positioning itself as a competitor to OpenAI's Sora. Released on July 31, 2024, Jimeng AI is available on both Android and Apple platforms in China. It offers a subscription model, with users able to generate up to 168 AI videos per month for about $9.65 monthly or $92.00 annually. The app allows for creative adjustments to existing images and videos, including background replacement and custom image styling. However, initial tests suggest that the video quality of Jimeng AI may not yet match that of OpenAI's Sora. The launch reflects a rapidly evolving market for text-to-video services in China, presenting both opportunities and challenges for content creators. The app's competitive pricing and features could appeal to creatives and marketers, but ByteDance will need to focus on quality control and navigate regulatory challenges to succeed in the crowded AI marketplace.

it's pretty underwhelming compared to the hype. The idea of turning text into video is super cool, but the execution feels half-baked. The videos it generates are low quality, with choppy transitions and awkward visuals that don’t match the text prompts well

The price is fair, but also I’m skeptical that this was trained on data that was given by consent😒
