How Actors Remember Their Lines

Actors remember their lines by focusing on deep understanding and meaning rather than rote repetition. This method, called elaborative rehearsal, involves relating lines to the character's motivations, emotions, and background. Research by psychologists Helga and Tony Noice confirms that actors analyze scripts deeply to recall lines naturally during performances. This approach to memory, emphasizing meaningful associations, is effective for long-lasting retention. It contrasts with shallow processing, which focuses on surface features like sound or font. Deep processing enhances memory by creating rich, semantic associations, making recall easier and more reliable.

From first-hand experience, memorization alone is really hard especially if it's meaningless. It becomes far easier when you connect it to emotions, like the article suggests.

Imagine trying to remember the digits of PI, those numbers are seemingly meaningless to you, however, im sure you could have an easier time remembering a monologue because those words are backed by feelings.
