Well sure, everything is derivative and builds upon another. There are completely novel designs in a given field, but those are likely inspired by some other idea or field, or just a unlikely association made in someone’s mind.
Also, new or novel doesn’t always mean good. I can see plenty of reasons, especially in web UI and HCI to follow conventions that already exist.
